FOOD & NUTRITION
People Who Eat a Plant-Based Diet High in Vegetables, Fruit, Whole Grains and Nuts Are Less Likely to Suffer From Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA), Study Finds: White Those Eating a Plant-Based Diet, High in Refined Carbohydrates, Sugary Drinks, Sugar and Salt Foods, Are at a Higher Risk of OSA
Hey everyone, did you know that what you eat can affect how well you sleep? A recent study found that people who eat lots of veggies, fruits, whole grains, and nuts are less likely to have trouble with snoring and breathing at night, a problem called obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). OSA can make you feel really tired during the day and can even lead to serious health issues.
But, not all plant-based foods are good for you in this case. Eating too many sweets, sugary drinks, or salty snacks can actually make you more likely to get OSA. So, it's important to pick the right kinds of foods.
The study looked at over 14,000 people and noticed that those who ate healthy plant foods had a lower chance of having OSA. But, those who ate a lot of junk food had a higher chance. Also, it seems that men benefit more from eating healthy plant foods, while women who eat lots of junk food might have a bigger risk of getting OSA.
What this means is that eating healthy is really important for keeping your sleep smooth and avoiding snoring. Choosing good foods can help keep your body healthy and reduce the chances of getting sleep problems. So next time you're picking out what to eat, think about how it might help you sleep better!
WEIGHT LOSS
Study Shows That the Majority of Those Who Take Weight Loss Medication and Exercise Regularly Are Able to Maintain the Beneficial Effects a Year After Medical Treatment Termination
Wondering what happens when people stop taking weight loss drugs? A new study from Denmark has some encouraging news! It found that if you keep exercising, you can maintain your weight loss even after you stop taking the medication.
Drugs like Wegovy and Saxenda have helped many people lose weight. But, there's been a worry. What happens when you stop taking them? Do you gain the weight back? The study led by Professor Signe Sørensen Torekov shows that's not necessarily true if you stick to regular exercise.
The research team discovered that exercising for just two hours a week can help you keep the weight off. This could be a quick walk or something more intense, depending on what you're comfortable with.
People who exercised not only kept the weight off but also felt better overall. They had more energy and were happier. This wasn't the case for those who only took the medication without exercising.
The takeaway? Doctors might start telling patients to exercise along with taking weight loss drugs. It's not only about losing weight but also feeling good. So, even after you stop the medication, staying active is key to keeping the weight off and enjoying a better quality of life.
HEALTH
Women Get the Same Exercise Benefits as Men, but With Less Effort. Men Get a Maximal Survival Benefit When Performing 300 Minutes of Moderate to Vigorous Activity Per Week, Whereas Women Get the Same Benefit From 140 Minutes Per Week
Good news from a big study by Cedars-Sinai's heart experts! They found out that women don't need to exercise as much as men to keep their hearts strong. This is great because sometimes, women don't exercise as much as they should.
Dr. Martha Gulati, who knows a lot about heart health, says this study is special. It shows women get more health benefits from every minute they exercise compared to men. So, if you're a woman and busy, your shorter workouts are still super good for your heart.
The study looked at a lot of people's exercise habits. It found out that moving your body is good for everyone because it lowers the risk of getting sick or dying early. But here's the cool part: women get a bigger health boost from less exercise. Women hit their best heart health by moving fast (like walking quickly or biking) for about 2.5 hours a week. Men need to do it for about 5 hours to get the same benefits.
Even for exercises that make your muscles strong, like lifting weights, women need less to reach the best results. Women only need one muscle-strengthening workout a week, but men need three.
This study is a big deal because it tells us that men and women need different amounts of exercise. For women, especially those over 45, knowing you can get big health wins in less time can make it easier to start or keep going with exercise.
Current Therapeutics for IBD Help Manage Symptoms and Control Chronic Inflammation but Do Little to Repair Damage to the Intestinal Lining. A New Regenerative Medicine Technique is Showing Promise for Both Its Ability to Heal This Tissue & Potentially Prevent Relapse
Researchers have found a new treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), a tough stomach condition. Today's medicines help with pain and swelling but don't fix the gut damage. The new method involves a special molecule called DPCA that helps heal this damage in mice, raising hopes for humans.
This breakthrough comes from Berkeley, where scientists discovered that DPCA can protect and repair the gut. It works by targeting a specific part of our body's healing system, showing great results in not just easing symptoms but actually healing the gut.
The treatment was tested in two ways. First, to see if it could stop the gut from getting damaged. It worked well, keeping the mice healthy. Then, they checked if it could heal the gut after damage had happened. This also succeeded, helping mice recover.
What's special about this treatment is it heals without leaving scars, which is important because scars in the gut can cause more problems. This method could even prevent the disease from coming back.
The hope is that, in the future, people with IBD could get a simple shot or pill to start healing. More research is needed, but this could be a big step toward better health for IBD patients.
