Scientists Found That Animal Fats – Butter, Lard and Beef Tallow – Impair the Immune System's Response to Tumors, However, Plant-based Fats Like Palm, Coconut, and Olive Oil Don’t, Finds a New Landmark Study in Mice. And Some of These May Even Help in the Fight

A new study in mice shows that not all fats affect the body the same way. Researchers found that eating a lot of animal fats—like butter, lard, and beef fat—can weaken the immune system’s ability to fight cancer. But plant fats—like coconut oil, palm oil, and olive oil—did not cause the same harm. Some may even help the body fight tumors.

In the study, all the mice were fed high-fat diets and became overweight. But the mice that ate animal fats had faster-growing tumors. Their immune systems didn’t work as well. The mice who ate plant fats had slower tumor growth, even though they were just as heavy.

The reason? Animal fats led to a buildup of certain fats in the blood. These fats made it harder for important immune cells—like T cells and natural killer (NK) cells—to fight off cancer. The plant fats did not cause this problem.

This study shows that the type of fat you eat matters. Being overweight is already a risk for cancer, but eating more animal fats may make things worse. Choosing plant-based fats might help keep your immune system strong.

This research was done in mice, so more studies are needed in people. But the results suggest that swapping out butter and lard for olive oil or coconut oil could be a simple way to support your health—especially as you age.

WEIGHT LOSS

The One, Big Unanswered Question About Ozempic

Ozempic and other GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro were first made to treat diabetes. But they’ve become widely known for helping people lose weight. Now, millions of Americans are using them — and the numbers keep growing.

These drugs seem to do more than just help with weight. Small studies suggest they might also protect the heart, lower the risk of Alzheimer’s, and even help with addiction, like smoking, drinking, or overeating. Some doctors wonder: Are these drugs the “magic bullet” for many of today’s health problems?

But here’s the big question no one can yet answer: What happens when millions of people take these drugs long-term?

Right now, GLP-1s are taken as injections and can cost over $1,000 a month without insurance. Pills are on the way, which could make them easier and cheaper to use. As access grows, more people may start taking them — not just for diabetes or obesity, but for other issues too.

It all sounds promising, but many experts urge caution. These medications are still new, and we don’t fully understand the long-term effects yet. Just because they may help with many health problems doesn’t mean they’re right for everyone.

As research continues, one thing is clear: Ozempic and drugs like it are changing the way we think about health. But the biggest question — should everyone be on them — still doesn’t have a clear answer.

HEALTH

You Can Slow Cognitive Decline as You Age, Large Study Finds

A large U.S. study found that simple lifestyle changes can help slow memory and thinking problems as we age.

Over 2,000 adults ages 60 to 79 took part in the study. All were inactive and had health risks like prediabetes or high blood pressure. Half joined a program with regular team meetings. They got coaching on exercise, diet, social time, and brain games. The other half received basic information and made changes on their own.

After two years, the coached group showed slower mental decline—by one to two years—compared to the self-guided group. But even the self-guided group improved over time.

The program focused on:

  • Exercise: People were told to move their bodies for 30 minutes a day with cardio and do strength training each week.

  • Diet: They followed the MIND diet, which includes lots of veggies, berries, and olive oil, and limits fried food, sweets, butter, and red meat.

  • Brain activity: Participants used brain-training apps to stay sharp.

  • Social time: Teams were asked to talk with others and go out more. Social time helped boost mood and brain health.

  • Health tracking: People learned to check their blood pressure and blood sugar at home.

Phyllis Jones, 66, joined the program after a tough time in her life. “I changed my habits and feel better than ever,” she said.

Experts say brain health is a long game—but healthy habits really can help, even later in life.

Mood Stress Supplements May Pose Serious Risks: Health Canada

Health Canada is warning people about a supplement called Natrol DHEA Mood & Stress. This product is sold online and in some Alberta stores, but it is not approved for sale in Canada.

The supplement contains DHEA, a hormone that can affect both men and women. Health Canada says taking DHEA without a doctor’s advice can be dangerous. It may cause acne, unusual hair growth, and problems with fertility. It could also raise the risk of serious health problems like breast or prostate cancer.

People with heart problems, liver disease, or blood clotting issues should not take DHEA. It may also be harmful for people with mental health conditions or those taking certain medications. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid it as well.

Retail Revolt, the store selling the product, has now stopped selling it and turned over the rest to Health Canada.

If you have taken this supplement, stop using it right away. Talk to your doctor, especially if you feel unwell. You should also report any side effects to Health Canada.

To stay safe, always check for approval before using health products. Authorized products will have an 8-digit number on the label—either a DIN, NPN, or DIN-HM. You can also search Health Canada’s online databases to check if a product is safe and approved.

Don’t risk your health. Make sure your supplements are legal and safe before you use them. Always read labels and check with a health care provider.
