People Carrying Two Copies of ‘Alzheimer’s Gene’ Lowered Risk by 35% via Diet Changes

A new long-term study has found that people with the highest genetic risk for Alzheimer’s disease can lower their risk of dementia by 35%—just by changing how they eat.

The study looked at people who carry two copies of the APOE4 gene. This gene greatly increases the risk of Alzheimer’s. But when these individuals closely followed a Mediterranean-style diet, their risk of developing dementia dropped sharply.

The Mediterranean diet focuses on whole, plant-based foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes. It includes healthy fats from olive oil and fish and limits red meat, sweets, and alcohol.

Researchers tracked over 5,700 adults for 34 years. Those who stuck to the Mediterranean diet—especially those with two APOE4 genes—had the biggest drop in dementia risk. The study also found that people with this gene seem to respond especially well to the nutrients in the diet, which may improve how their brain and body work.

Experts say this is a huge finding. Many have believed that carrying two APOE4 genes meant Alzheimer’s was almost certain. But this study shows that lifestyle can make a big difference.

Other studies have found similar results. Even small changes—like adding leafy greens or berries—can help the brain. Some people even showed signs of brain improvement, including memory areas getting larger.

The takeaway? Your genes aren’t your destiny. Eating better, moving more, and lowering stress may help protect your brain—no matter your risk.

WEIGHT LOSS

Found Out Why I Have Not Been Losing Weight

Have you been eating healthy and exercising but still not losing weight? You’re not alone—and it may not be your fault.

Even if you're on a low-carb diet or doing intermittent fasting, certain hidden factors may be slowing your progress. One big one is insulin—a hormone that helps manage blood sugar. When insulin stays high, your body holds onto fat. And many foods spike insulin without looking like sugar. For example, white bread or processed snacks may say “0 sugar” but still act like sugar in your body.

Seed oils, poor sleep, frequent snacks, and stress can also push insulin up. Even healthy foods like wine or a slice of bread can knock you out of fat-burning mode (called “ketosis”) for 1–2 days.

Here are simple ways to fix it:

  • Cut back on carbs, sugars, and snacks

  • Eat fewer meals (no constant grazing)

  • Get enough sleep

  • Exercise—but don’t overdo it

  • Try natural supports like berberine, apple cider vinegar, or vitamin D

Also, if you feel less hungry and your energy is up—even if the scale hasn’t moved—your body may already be healing. Sometimes it’s “get healthy to lose weight,” not the other way around.

As your body adjusts, try longer fasting windows: 18:6, then 23:1 (one meal a day), and maybe even dry fasting (no food or water for 12–24 hours) for advanced results.

Bottom line: If what you’re doing isn’t working, tweak the details—not just the calories.

Cannabis Use Linked to Stronger Emotional Responses but Also Better Recovery in People With Anxiety. Cannabis Users With Anxiety Show More Pronounced Emotional Responses to Negative Experiences but Also Bounce Back More Effectively

A new study shows that people with anxiety who use cannabis may feel stronger emotions when something stressful happens—but they also recover from those feelings more quickly.

Researchers followed 499 adults with mild anxiety. Some used cannabis with mostly THC, some with mostly CBD, and some with a 1:1 mix. Others didn’t use cannabis at all. The study lasted four weeks.

Everyone went through a stress test where they remembered a bad memory and then did a calming breathing exercise. The group using cannabis had stronger emotional reactions to the memory. But after the breathing exercise, they felt better faster than people who didn’t use cannabis.

THC—the part of cannabis that makes people feel “high”—was linked to higher heart rates and stronger emotions. CBD did not raise heart rate and may be more calming. However, people using cannabis didn’t get more or less emotional over time. That means cannabis may not change emotions long-term, but it may affect how people react in the moment.

The study had some limits. People chose their own dose, and they knew what type of cannabis they were using. So, we can’t say for sure that cannabis caused the changes.

Still, this study is one of the first to look at real-world cannabis use for anxiety. It shows that cannabis may have both helpful and unhelpful effects. It’s best to talk to a doctor before using cannabis for anxiety or stress.

People With Learning Disabilities Progress Faster to Severe Type 2 Diabetes and Are at Greater Risk of Dying From Their Condition Than People Without These Disabilities, Research Suggests

People with learning disabilities, like Down syndrome or cerebral palsy, may have a harder time managing type 2 diabetes. A large UK study found they get more severe diabetes faster and are more likely to die from it, even if their blood sugar is better controlled.

The study looked at over 280,000 adults with type 2 diabetes. About 2,000 had a learning disability. These people were usually younger when diagnosed and more likely to live in poor areas, be very overweight, and already have health problems linked to diabetes.

Even though they had better blood sugar control after five years, they were 20% more likely to need insulin, which shows their diabetes got worse faster. They were also nearly twice as likely to die from any cause, including diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is hard to manage. It requires daily care—like checking blood sugar, eating healthy, taking medicine, and staying active. This can be especially hard for someone with a learning disability. They may need more help from family or caregivers.

Doctors aren’t sure why this happens. It could be that their diabetes is worse at the start, or that they are watched more closely and treated faster. Either way, they may need extra support to stay healthy.

Bottom line: People with learning disabilities face a higher risk from type 2 diabetes. Even if their numbers look good, they may need more help to avoid serious problems. Extra care could save lives.
