Diet and Sugary Drinks Raise Risk of Common Liver Disease by Up to 60%, New Research Finds

A new study shows that drinking soda — even diet soda — may raise your risk of a common liver disease by up to 60%.
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) happens when fat builds up in the liver of people who drink little or no alcohol. It can lead to serious problems like liver scarring and cancer. Today, around 38% of Americans may have it.
Researchers looked at nearly 124,000 people in the UK over 10 years. They found that drinking just one can of diet soda a day increased liver disease risk by 60%. Sugary drinks raised it by 50%. Surprisingly, switching from sugary drinks to diet soda didn’t lower the risk.
Both types of drinks may hurt the liver. Sugary drinks raise blood sugar and insulin levels, which can cause weight gain and liver fat. Diet drinks, though low in calories, may still affect gut bacteria, increase sugar cravings, and confuse the body’s signals for feeling full.
The good news? Replacing soda with water helped. People who swapped diet drinks for water lowered their liver disease risk by over 15%. Those who replaced sugary drinks with water saw a 13% drop in risk.
Experts say this study is stronger than past research because it followed a large number of people over time. It adds to growing concerns about sweetened drinks — even the ones marketed as “healthier.”

WEIGHT LOSS
Daily Apple Cider Vinegar Supplementation Significantly Helps Overweight or Diabetic Adults Lose Weight and Reduce Their Body Mass Index and Waist Circumference

Taking apple cider vinegar (ACV) every day may help adults lose weight, lower their body mass index (BMI), and shrink their waistline, a new study says. Researchers looked at 10 clinical trials with nearly 800 people who were overweight or had type 2 diabetes.
People who took ACV daily for 4 to 12 weeks lost more weight and had lower BMIs than those who didn’t. On average, they lost about 16 pounds. Those with type 2 diabetes also saw their waistlines shrink, which may mean they lost harmful belly fat.
The best results came from taking about two tablespoons (30 mL) of ACV each day. Experts believe ACV works by slowing digestion, helping people feel full, and supporting fat burning and blood sugar control.
However, ACV is not a magic cure. It works best when combined with healthy eating and regular activity. Also, drinking too much or taking it without water may hurt your stomach or teeth.
While the study shows promise, more long-term research is needed. If you’re thinking about trying ACV, talk to your doctor first.
Bottom line: A small daily dose of apple cider vinegar might be a simple, low-cost way to support weight loss—especially for adults who are overweight or have diabetes.

Experts Say It is Safe to Use Paracetamol During Pregnancy and Trump's Autism Declaration is 'Baseless'

Health experts are speaking out after U.S. President Donald Trump said that taking paracetamol during pregnancy could cause autism. Doctors say this claim is not true and is not supported by strong science.
Paracetamol (also called acetaminophen or Tylenol) is commonly used to treat pain and fever. It’s considered safe to use during pregnancy, especially when taken in small amounts for a short time. Other medicines, like ibuprofen, can be risky for unborn babies.
Some studies have suggested a link between paracetamol and autism, but experts say those studies are weak. A major study in Sweden looked at over two million children and found no connection between paracetamol and autism, ADHD, or learning delays.
In Australia, health leaders have also rejected Trump’s claim. The country’s medical agency said there is no solid proof that paracetamol causes autism. They agree with experts around the world who say it is safe when used as directed.
Doctors say it’s important not to ignore pain or fever during pregnancy. High fevers can lead to early birth or even miscarriage. Paracetamol is the safest choice for relief.
Experts say pregnant women should not be afraid to take paracetamol if they need it. It’s safe, helpful, and widely used.

The Nocebo Effect, Not Gluten, May Trigger Symptoms for Many With IBS. Study Found No Significant Difference in Symptom Flare-ups When These Patients Consumed Bars Containing Wheat, Purified Gluten, or a Gluten-free Sham Substance

A new study suggests that for many people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), it may not be gluten that triggers their symptoms. Instead, it could be the expectation that gluten will cause problems. This reaction is known as the nocebo effect, when believing something will harm you causes real symptoms.
Researchers tested people with IBS who believed they were sensitive to gluten. Each person ate three different cereal bars on separate weeks. One bar contained wheat, one had purified gluten, and one was completely gluten-free. All bars looked and tasted the same, and no one knew which bar they were eating each week.
The results were surprising. About 39% had worse symptoms after the wheat bar, 36% after the gluten bar, and 29% still had symptoms after the fake bar with no gluten or wheat. The numbers were too close to show a real difference. Nearly everyone reported bloating or pain after all three bars, even the harmless one.
This suggests that the mind plays a strong role in IBS flare-ups. When people expect discomfort, their body may respond as if the food is harmful, even when it isn’t.
Even after learning the results, most participants continued to avoid gluten because they believed it made them feel better. The study shows that IBS care may need more than diet changes. Understanding the brain–gut connection and reducing fear around certain foods may help many people feel better.
