Big Surges in New Autism Diagnoses Among Young Adults, as Well a Rise in Diagnoses for Girls and Young Women, Have Driven a Near-tripling of U.S. Autism Cases in Just Over a Decade, Researchers Report
Recent research shows that, in the U.S., autism diagnoses have nearly tripled in the last decade. A big study of over 12 million patients found a 175% rise in autism diagnoses from 2011 to 2022.
The increase was especially large among young adults aged 26 to 34, with a 450% rise in diagnoses. This suggests that more young adults are now being diagnosed. This is due to better awareness and screening.
The study, which appeared in JAMA Network Open, also points out changes in who is getting diagnosed. While autism has been more common in boys, the gap is closing. Diagnoses in girls went up by 305% compared to boys’ 185% rise. Among adults, women’s diagnoses increased by 315%, more than men’s 215% increase.
Experts think these changes are due to better education about autism and changes in how doctors screen for it. They also mention that girls and women might have hidden their autism traits in the past due to social pressures. Now, as awareness increases and stigmas decrease, more females are seeking diagnoses.
However, the researchers note that even with these increases, many adults, especially older women, might still be undiagnosed. They didn’t get checked for autism when they were younger.
