FOOD & NUTRITION

Researchers Conducted a Study Involving 3,030 Colorectal Cancer Cases and 3,044 Controls. Adherence to Individual Recommendations on Physical Activity, Plant-based Food Intake, Red/processed Meat Intake Limitation and Alcohol Intake Limitation Showed an Inverse Association With Colorectal Cancer Risk

A new study from China looked at how lifestyle choices affect colon and rectal cancer (called colorectal cancer). Researchers studied 3,030 people with cancer and compared them to 3,044 people without it.

They followed health tips from a 2018 report by the World Cancer Research Fund and American Institute for Cancer Research. These tips include eating more plant-based foods, staying active, and limiting red meat, processed meat, and alcohol.

Here’s what the study found:

  • More plant foods (like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains) were linked to lower cancer risk.

  • Less red and processed meat (like bacon or sausage) helped lower the risk.

  • Drinking less alcohol was also linked to better results.

  • Being active made a positive difference too.

The people who followed these habits the most had almost half the cancer risk of those who did not. The strongest results came from eating more plant foods and drinking less alcohol. These results were also backed up by genetic data.

Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers in adults. This study shows that small changes in what you eat and how much you move may help protect you.

If you're over 45, these simple steps could help your long-term health.

WEIGHT LOSS

Lawsuits Claiming Ozempic, Other GLP-1s Led to Blindness Become Second Mass Litigation Over the Drugs

Some people are suing the makers of Ozempic and other similar drugs, saying the medicines caused them to lose their eyesight. These drugs include Ozempic, Wegovy, Saxenda, and Trulicity. They are used to treat diabetes and help people lose weight.

The lawsuits claim these drugs may cause a rare eye condition called NAION. This condition happens when blood flow to the optic nerve is reduced or blocked. It can lead to vision loss or even blindness.

Right now, there are 30 lawsuits in federal court and over 40 in state courts. A panel of judges has decided to combine these cases into one group in a court in Pennsylvania. This type of group case is called a multi-district litigation, or MDL.

There is already another MDL for different claims about these same drugs. That case says the drugs may cause stomach paralysis. But the new lawsuits focus on eye damage, so they will be handled in a separate group, even though both are before the same judge.

A study in 2024 first raised concerns about the risk of vision problems. After that, more people began filing lawsuits.

The companies that make the drugs, Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly, say the claims are not true. They also say they cannot change the drug’s formula without FDA approval.

Many people still use these drugs. A CDC report found that more than one in four adults with diabetes are taking a GLP-1 drug.

HEALTH

Gum Disease is Associated With Increased Risk of Cardiovascular Events, Including Heart Attack, Stroke, Atrial Fibrillation, Heart Failure and Cardiometabolic Health Conditions. Effective Prevention and Treatment of Gum Disease Could Potentially Decrease the Burden of Cardiovascular Disease

A new report from the American Heart Association says gum disease may raise your risk of heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and other heart-related problems. Taking care of your mouth may help protect your heart, too.

Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is very common. It affects more than 4 in 10 adults over age 30. It starts with red, swollen gums, also known as gingivitis. If not treated, it can get worse and lead to tooth loss.

Researchers now believe the bacteria from gum disease can enter the blood. This may cause swelling in your blood vessels. That swelling can lead to blocked arteries and heart problems. People who smoke, are overweight, or have high blood pressure or diabetes are more likely to get gum disease.

The report says brushing your teeth, flossing, and seeing a dentist regularly may lower your heart risk. In one study, people who brushed three or more times a day had a lower risk of heart disease than those who brushed once a day or less.

Doctors have not yet proven that treating gum disease will stop heart disease. But keeping your gums healthy may help lower harmful swelling in your body.

People with heart risks should be extra careful about their oral health. Good mouth care is not just for a pretty smile—it may also help you live longer and feel better.

Sleep Banking Helps You Get Some Rest in Advance

If you know a busy week is coming, you can try “sleep banking.” This means getting extra sleep ahead of time—like saving sleep in the bank before you run low.

Dr. Diego Ramonfaur, a medical resident, uses this trick. He works long, changing shifts. When he knows harder days are ahead, he goes to bed earlier. He says it helps him stay sharp and avoid burnout.

Most adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night. Experts say going to bed and waking up at the same time every day is best—even on weekends. But life doesn’t always work that way. That’s where sleep banking can help.

Dr. Rebecca Robbins of Harvard calls it “sleep extension.” It helps your body get ready for days when sleep will be short. Dr. Yo-El Ju, another sleep doctor, says it’s like paying off future sleep debt.

To try it, start going to bed 15 minutes earlier each night, about a week before your busy time. That gives you around 90 extra minutes of sleep over the week.

Sleep banking won’t fix everything. It helps with focus and reaction time, but not with tasks that need deep thinking or multitasking. Also, people with insomnia should skip this—it may make things worse.

Once your busy time is over, get back to your normal sleep schedule. A bedtime reminder can help you wind down. Our brains need a chance to relax before falling asleep.
